PBTF introduces educational booklets in Spanish
Educational booklets on childhood brain tumors are now available for the first time in Spanish from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF).
"The need for these translations is dire," said Louise Noble, MSW, the PBTF’s family support program manager. "Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, not just in Texas, California and Florida, but all over the country."
With this population growth, Noble said, has come an influx of Spanish-speaking brain tumor patients. "In many cases, the parents of these kids don’t speak much, if any, English. If their local hospital or care provider doesn’t have a Spanish interpreter on staff, there’s a real information gap.
"Spanish is the primary language in more than 20 countries," Noble added. "This means that our materials will help families around the world."
The available titles are Basic Facts About Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors, Questions for Your Medical Care Team When Your Child Has a Brain Tumor, Basic Facts About Medulloblastoma/PNET, Basic Facts About Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma, Basic Facts About Astrocytoma, Basic Facts About Ependymoma, and Basic Facts About Glioma.

Folletos informativos sobre los tumores cerebrales pediátricos por primera vez están disponibles en español por La Fundación del Tumor Cerebral Pediátrico (o PBTF por sus siglas en inglés).
"La necesidad para estas publicaciones es inmensa," dice Louise Noble, MSW, la manager del program de apoyo familiar de la PBTF. "La población hispana está creciendo muy rápido; no solo en Texas, California y Florida pero en todas partes del país."
Junto con este crecimiento, dice Noble, ha aumentado el número de niños de habla hispana con tumores cerebrales. "A veces, sus padres tampoco hablan inglés. Si el hospital o la clínica no tiene un intérprete, puede haber un hueco enorme en la comunicación entre la familia y los integrantes del grupo médico."
"Por otra parte, el español es el primer idioma en más de 20 paises mundiales," dice Noble. "Esto significa que los folletos podrían servir a familias alrededor del mundo."
