Dozens of the world's finest pediatric brain tumor researchers joined PBTF staff and board members at the second annual PBTF Institute meeting in San Diego.

(Asheville, N.C.) North America's leading pediatric brain tumor researchers met in San Diego last week for the second annual meeting of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Institutes.

Neuro-oncology investigators and their individual research teams were on hand to share the results of more than 40 pediatric brain tumor research projects funded by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) through its highly regarded research institute program.

The conference brought together researchers from each of the PBTF Institutes, at Duke University, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, and the University of California, San Francisco.

"What makes this prestigious assembly of researchers unique is the in-depth and open sharing of current, unpublished research projects that are the stepping stones to fulfillment of the PBTF mission of finding the cause of and cure for childhood brain tumors," said PBTF President Mike Traynor.

Several of the research findings showed bright promise for the escalation of new discoveries to provide more effective and less invasive treatments for childhood brain tumors. The principal investigators of each of the research teams unanimously agreed that this scientific meeting provided a great deal of insight into the challenging road blocks to providing an understanding of the causes of pediatric brain tumors, which are the leading cause of cancer death in children.

Current funding of the PBTF Institutes stands at $7 million, with all funds coming directly from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. While several PBTF fundraising efforts support this work, most donations come from the Ride for Kids® motorcycling program, with long-standing sponsorship from the American Honda Motor Company.

On May 14, 2008, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will announce a multimillion-dollar increase in funding of the PBTF Institute program. Information will be available via PR Newswire and at www.curethekids.org.
