PBTF radiothons raise $63,000

March 1, 2011

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation® (PBTF) held radiothons in West Palm Beach and Phoenix last month to raise funds and awareness. The two events, Sunny for Kids and KSLX for Kids, combined to bring in over $63,000 for the PBTF’s family support and medical research programs.

Sunny for Kids took place Feb. 17 and 18 in the studios of Sunny 104.3. Members of the station’s on-air and management teams joined the effort, along with Heath Evans of the New Orleans Saints and Emily Pantelides and Juan Carlos Fanjul from CBS12's Good Morning South Florida.

“As broadcasters it’s our first priority to serve the community, and getting behind the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation was something we felt strongly about doing,” said Sunny 104.3 Program Director John O’Connell about the second annual event. “We know that all of the hard work everyone put into this great event will go on to help children afflicted by this horrible illness.”

The radiothon raised $15,500 through donations and pledges. Local volunteers from Walgreens staffed the call-in lines, and Live Nation provided tickets to area concert events for donor incentives.

KSLX rocks for PBTF

The following week, Phoenix classic rock station KSLX held its fourth radiothon to support the PBTF. This year’s KSLX for Kids collected more donations than ever from the station’s listeners, raising $48,000.

Chandler Fashion Center hosted the event, which featured live interviews with several brain tumor survivors and family members. Their stories had a clear impact on the community.

“Our listeners reached deep into their pockets and the response was incredible,” said Jim Owen, 100.7 KLSX Program Director. “Hour by hour we were gratified hearing the phones ringing and watching the numbers grow.”

Local sponsors Arizona Connections Academy, P.F. Chang’s, Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill, Paradise Bakery, Panda Express, and Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham all contributed to the radiothon’s success.

An online auction will continue through March 9 at www.kslx.com. Items include a guitar autographed by Alice Cooper, a football signed by Chris “Beanie” Wells, and an autographed "ZZ Top: Live from Texas" DVD. All proceeds benefit the PBTF.
