San Diego Ride for KidsĀ®

Brain tumor survivor Jordan gets ready to roll.

  • Motorcyclists raise $60,000 in San Diego

Beautiful Mira Costa College in Cardiff was the setting for the second annual San Diego Ride for Kids®, which attracted 240 motorcyclists and fundraisers on Oct. 15. The riders were treated to a winding route through the countryside northeast of the city before returning to campus for the Celebration of Life.

The program featured seven local brain tumor survivors, honored as the "stars" of the day. Seven-year-olds Jordan and Regina charmed the crowd along with several teen and adult survivors.

Scholarship recipient Michelle, 23, thanked the motorcyclists by saying, "You are not just saving us. You are helping us go to school and have a future."

The crowd also heard from Dr. Eduardo Serna, who rode in the event with Esmerelda's Riders, a club formed in memory of a friend's daughter who succumbed to a brain tumor.

The total raised in San Diego was $60,337. Top fundraisers were Rebe and Cliff Philip of Temecula, who brought $12,491. GWRRA CA-1N of Oceanside was the top chapter with $18,295 in donations, and the customers of Escondido Cycle Center raised $16,401 to make it the top motorcycle business. Cliff Philip won the drawing for a new Honda motorcycle.

Thanks went to San Diego task force leaders Patty and Rick Hinrichs, visitation leader Edel Albright, the hardworking volunteer task force members and event volunteers, for putting together a fantastic second-year event.
