Generous motorcyclists and fundraisers at the second annual Albuquerque Ride for Kids® brought in more than $66,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's medical research and family support programs on April 22.
Blue skies and a light breeze greeted the 400 participants as they gathered at the Journal Pavilion outside of Albuquerque. The police-escorted ride treated the motorcyclists to sweeping views of the desert and mountains of the "Land of Enchantment."
Back at the Pavilion, the Celebration of Life program featured eight local brain tumor patients, their families, a social worker, and top fundraisers. From 4-year-old Jaiden to college senior Megan, the stars of the day captivated the crowd with their stories of survivorship. Maya, 23, who is studying to get her master's degree in counseling, said she wants to give back to the community by starting her own non-profit to help children.
The medical community was represented by Jessica Wiggins, a pediatric oncology social worker from the University of New Mexico Hospital. Other VIP guests included World War II veterans and Navajo code talkers Samuel Smith Sr. and Bill Toledo.
The total raised in Albuquerque was $66,432. The top fundraisers were Kathy and Ted Bates of Albuquerque with $6,300. GWRRA NM Chapter W was the top club/chapter with $23,960 raised, and the customers of Albuquerque's Accessory Pit made it the top motorcycle business with $43,522 in donations.
The grand prize, a brand-new Honda motorcycle, went to Tom Mitchell of Albuquerque.
The event was a great success thanks to the efforts of the local Ride for Kids® task force leaders, Lynda and Rick Howell and Kathy and Ted Bates, visitation leader Jackie Cooke, the fantastic volunteer task force members, and the hardworking event volunteers.
