The San Diego Ride for Kids® raised more than $61,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation on Oct. 21.
As the 350 motorcyclists and supporters gathered at Mira Costa College in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, the day dawned bright. Santa Ana winds created a strong breeze, but the ride stayed far clear of area wildfires. Incredible vistas of the coastline and mountains made the police-escorted ride truly enjoyable, but the best was yet to come.
After the ride looped back to the college, eight local brain tumor patients provided the day's inspiration. From 3-year-old Evan to grad student Michelle, these Ride for Kids "stars" gave the crowd something to cheer about.
The motorcyclists also heard from Dr. Eduardo Serna, a local emergency room doctor who rode in the event. "As a doctor, you always want an informed patient as they have a much better survival rate," he said. "PBTF gives patients the knowledge they need to be informed."
The third annual San Diego event raised $61,530. Top individual fundraiser Cliff Philip of Temecula brought $10,536, while top club/chapter honors went to GWRRA CA Chapter 1N with $17,220. Escondido Cycle Center's customers contributed $22,193 to make it the top motorcycle business, and Peter Friedkin of Laguna Niguel won the grand prize Honda.
Many thanks to the event's task force volunteers, led by Gary Magee and visitation leader Edel Albright, for organizing a terrific day for the kids.
