Utah Ride for KidsĀ®

August 22, 2009

  • Utah celebrates five years of riding for kids

Motorcyclists showed their support for kids with brain tumors at the fifth annual Utah Ride for Kids® with $45,100 in donations. Over 200 riders turned out for the Saturday, Aug. 22, event at This Is the Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City.

They were joined by seven local brain tumor survivors on a sunny ride through Emigration Canyon, winding upward to an elevation of about 7,000 feet before descending to Riverside Park in Morgan City.

There the Celebration of Life program gave the participants a chance to hear from Ride for Kids® "stars" like 8-year-olds Jimmy and David. The younger children were inspired by PBTF college scholarship recipients Lindsey, who recently graduated, and Holli, who starts her freshman year on Aug. 24.

Dr. Soumen Khatua, a pediatric neuro-oncologist at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, reminded everyone that their dollars fund research that is saving kids' lives.

    The first-place fundraisers were:

    • Individuals: Walter and Donna Young, $7,213
    • Club/Chapter: GWRRA UT-M, $11,687
    • Motorcycle Business: Monarch Honda, $10,318

The Youngs also won the drawing for a new Honda motorcycle.

A big thank-you went to Duane and Sharen Carlile and Harvey and Carol Dean, leaders of the local volunteer Ride for Kids® task force.
